Horners' Almoners Committee

From their beginnings the Livery Companies undertook to be responsible, amongst other things, for the social welfare of their Members and their families. This welfare was both spiritual and material. Members and their families received help in sickness and in bereavement. Almshouses were established and today some are still support by their Companies. The Horners are one of the few Companies who have an Almoners' Committee.

The Committee's activities include visiting, telephoning and offering support to those who are unwell with either acute or chronic illness together with the housebound. Flowers and cards are sent when appropriate. Of course these responses are only made having received information from Members or their families. The Almoners welcome people as they arrive at church to attend the Election Day and Carol Services. They, and other volunteers, hand out the service sheets, provide help with the seating and take the collections. The Chairman sends out cards from the Master and the Company to Liverymen to mark "significant" birthdays - from 70th - in 5 year gaps. Most recently we have sent Christmas parcels to personnel from 27 Squadron serving in Afghanistan over Christmas and the New Year which have been very well received.
