Following the cancellation last year, due to the COVID pandemic, 1349 Squadron was very pleased to hold its Annual Inspection this year on Saturday 20th November in Woking Park. The Squadron was delighted and honoured to have Air Vice-Marshal Steve Shell CB OBE MA RAF as the Reviewing Officer. The Horners were also delighted to see Steve Shell as he is a former OC of 27 Squadron, with whom we have an excellent association.

A good attendance by the Horners, ten in all including The Master, Upper Warden and Deputy Master, was very well received by the Squadron. In addition, the Mayor of Woking, Cllr Liam Lyons, was present. Following the inspection, the squadron gave an impeccable performance as they marched passed the Air-Vice Marshal who took the salute.

After light refreshments and a demonstration by cadets of various activities of the Squadron, the Awards Ceremony was held. The Master presented the President’s Trophy for the best cadet of the year to Flt Sgt Baker, then gave a short talk to the cadets and their parents about the Horners and touched on how important polymers are in their life, using the example of mobile phones. The Master then introduced the new Horners Trophy to mark the tenth anniversary of the association between the Horners and the Squadron; it being awarded to the Cadet Forces Adult Volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to the Squadron during the year. The first recipient was Flt Sgt Stewart Dick.

Air-Vice Marshal Steve Shell addressed the cadets with a very positive talk about how well their experiences within the cadets will set them up for whatever career they finally decide to choose.

That evening the Squadron annual dinner was held at Woking Golf Club for the staff, senior cadets and guests. Six guests from the Horners attended including the Master. It was an excellent affair with speeches from the Squadron OC, Flt Lt Justin Muir, and Steve Shell and a great opportunity for all to talk in a relaxed environment in the bar afterwards. For nearly all of the senior cadets this was their first experience of attending a formal dinner and by the looks of things they thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
