Eighteen teams assembled at Ashridge Golf Club on Wednesday 10 June 2026 to compete for the prestigious Horners’ Trophy. What promised to be an excellent day of golf on one of England’s finest inland courses quickly became a stern test of determination, resilience and good humour.
The competition began under mixed skies, but as the round progressed the weather deteriorated dramatically. Players were confronted by torrential rain, thunder and lightning, followed by a fierce hailstorm that swept across the course.
Nevertheless, some excellent golf was played. After a hard-fought contest, the Tallow Chandlers emerged victorious, successfully retaining the Horners’ Trophy and claiming the title for the second consecutive year.
The Horners A Team produced an outstanding performance to finish in second place. The team included Mike O’Brien, the current Master together with Evan Price, who was making his first appearance for the Horners’ Golf Society.

The 2026 Horners Trophy will undoubtedly be remembered not only for the Tallow Chandlers’ successful defence of the trophy, but also for the resilience displayed by all eighteen teams in the face of truly challenging conditions.
A special vote of thanks is due to Andy and Colin Freedman, who, as always, organised the event with their customary efficiency and attention to detail. Despite the weather conditions, the day ran smoothly and was enjoyed by all who took part. Their hard work and commitment continue to make the Horners’ Trophy one of the highlights of the Livery golfing calendar.
