INSTALLATION, SERVICE & LUNCHEON 2nd February 2023

By February 10, 2023February 11th, 2023Uncategorized

This year, at the Installation Court, held for the first time at Saddlers Hall, John MacCabe was installed as Master, Barry Maunders as Upper Warden and Rebecca Joyce as Renter Warden. Our outgoing Master, Mike Birrell was installed as Deputy Master. Prior to this, David Chitty was installed as our new Honorary Treasurer and his wife Claire Chitty as Assistant Clerk.

We install our new Master every year on Candlemas Day, the day in the Church Calendar marking the Virgin Mary presenting the infant Jesus in the Temple. After the installation Court, the Master and Wardens processed to the Church of St James Garlickhythe for the Election Day Service, which was taken by our Chaplain, the Reverend Gary Bradley whose sermon was most inspiring.

Then the congregation returned to Saddlers Hall for a reception and convivial Luncheon.
Topically, in this Coronation Year, two caskets were brought to Saddlers Hall for display from the Royal Collection. These were given by the Horners as gifts to King George V and the second to King George VI in 1911 and 1923 respectively (Further details can be seen at https://www.horners.org.uk/the-company/our-history-plus/) . Our Keeper of Horn Past Master Georgina Scott told the assembled company all about them.

During his maiden speech as Master, John MacCabe told us about his Charity for the year, the Freedom Project, a Charity aimed primarily at women who are the victims of domestic violence.

The outgoing Master Mike Birrell presented a giant cheque for £12,000 to David Savill representing Age Exchange his Charity for the preceding year. This contribution from the Horners will allow a programme of support for 20 dementia suffers and their carers for the next year.

Past Master High Moss gave thanks to the outgoing Master, Mike Birrell, for his contribution to the Horners in what had been a most successful year. Our Senior Past Master Miles Baird toasted the Company with its root and branches forever and Past Master Jeremy Cartwright finished off the lunch with a rendition of the popular ‘Horners are Best’
