Under a cloudless sky on the hottest day of the year so far a total of 18 livery companies had entered 32 teams in the fast growing annual Glovers’ Inter Livery Golf Croquet Day at the Sussex County Croquet Club at Southwick.

Croquet players were for the first time divided into those that had played croquet previously competing for the Glovers’ Cup and a fine new trophy called the Inter Livery Challenge Cup for those who were new to croquet or who had only dabbled at it in the past.

The Horners had a team in each section with Denis Cruse and Alan Price being our representatives in the Glovers’ Cup and our new enthusiastic croquet player, Karen Hately, assisted by Phil McCarthy from the Butchers who was happy to be a Horner for the day in the Inter Livery Challenge Cup.

Both Horners’ teams gave a good account of themselves without giving distinguished performances.  Denis and Alan won 4 games and lost one in their group of 8.  This put them in third place in the group by the narrowest of margins and in the play off for 5th and 6th where they won a tight game against the Coachmakers.

.Karen and Phil won 3 and lost 2 in their group of 8.  They were in the play off for 7th and 8th place where they had an excellent win over the Educators A team.
